Fairwear - A sign of fair and sustainable fashion

The Fair Wear Foundation is a non-profit organization that has set itself the clear goal of improving working conditions in the textile industry. The special focus is on sewing.

Unlike previous seals, the Fair Wear certification is not applied to individual products, but is awarded to manufacturing companies in the clothing industry. All members of the Fair Wear Foundation undertake to ensure decent working conditions.

The criteria are based on the conditions for socially acceptable working and living conditions of the ILO (International Labor Organization of the United Nations) and the UN Commissioner for Human Rights. From this, the following standards have been established:

1. Employment is freely chosen
2. Freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining
3. There is no discrimination in employment
4. No child labor
5. Payment of Living Wage
6. Reasonable working hours
7. Safe and healthy working conditions
8. Legally Binding Employment Relationship

With the Fair Wear seal, you only have to note that only the working conditions during the actual production of the clothing are observed. All other areas of the manufacturing chain such as production of raw materials and transport are not controlled here.

Ecological factors are also not taken into account.

The Fair Wear Foundation seal shows consumers that companies comply with ethical working conditions and are committed to sustainability and environmental protection.

The Fair Wear Foundation seal also shows that the company regularly monitors its suppliers and manufacturers for compliance with working conditions. Consumers can therefore be sure that products with the seal were manufactured under fair conditions.

However, there is also criticism of the Fair Wear Foundation and its seal. Some critics argue that the criteria are not strict enough and there is no independent verification.
